Joinery
Urns are very small and are treated with great care and respect. Because of this, nearly any method of joining two pieces of wood together would be adequate. And yet, given the precious nature of an urn, we have opted to go the extra mile with our techniques. In constructing urns, we use hand tools. But we also use power tools that are carefully manipulated by hand. There are no automated systems in our shop. Access to the interior of our urns is thru a panel on the bottom. These panels are held in place by brass screws to provide easy and repeatable access. But no metal fasteners are used anywhere else on the urns. Very tight joints are hand cut and glued.
At the present time we are offering urns that are joined together with either lock miter joints or dovetails. Both of these methods are often used in furniture making and are used in areas that require great strength and durability. The lock miter joints provide a very neat, trim appearance. The dovetail joints are more rustic in nature and show off the end grain of the wood. A dovetailed urn is very obviously not a product of mass production and is most obviously built of solid wood.
We are soon to release photos of our new frame and panel urn. Check back for details!
